() Egyptian philosopher, journalist and author. As a child from a middle-class family, he was able to enter university and study medicine; due to illness which hospitalized him for two years during his studies, he became interested in philosophy and religion.

He started contributing to leading Egyptian Magazines and journals in the late s and in left his medical career to devote himself fully to writing. He wrote some 80 books, of which the majority dealt with faith, religion and philosophy, some translated into English; he also wrote at least five books criticizing Marxism, and others about his frequent travels in Europe, North America, sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East.

Of his numerous works of fiction, some were dramatized as well as made into films. He was also behind a long running series of television shows on science and faith.

In the mids he wrote at least three sf novels; some other books have sf and fantastic elements. These include Al-khuruj min at-tabut (; trans as "The Rising from the Coffin", ?), Rajul tahta as-sifr ["The Man with a Temperature Below Zero"] () and Al-canqabut (; trans as "The Spider", serialized in the magazine Arab Observer).
